‘Salty Concentrate’ is a key cost factor in Desalination

Most of us know that desalination is expensive but the major chunk of it also is to manage and dispose (especially inland) the salty concentrate that is a byproduct of the process! Along with the salty concentrate a good amount water goes waste too, so it is not only expensive but we are losing water.

A good improvement of existing solutions and technologies is to reducing the wastage of water in concentrate streams in addition to any ideas to improve the overall desalination process. There is currently a  challenge run by the Dept of Reclamation and is great one chemists out there or for that matter any creative thinkers with knowledge of desalination. For example, instead of dumping the concentrate deep underground, perhaps a creative inventor can come up with a new product/usage that uses the concentrate!

It is awesome to read about Israel’s success in desalination, from a severe drought to surplus! Cost wise they are paying less than what residents of LA pay per month. The process and innovation of using lava stone, will definitely inspire you to tackle this challenge. Now, go tackle this #ProWoSo
