{"id":287,"date":"2021-05-09T15:49:00","date_gmt":"2021-05-09T22:49:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pieneers.com\/blog\/?p=287"},"modified":"2022-09-22T21:33:37","modified_gmt":"2022-09-23T04:33:37","slug":"only-2-percent-receive-sign-language-for-the-deaf-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pieneers.com\/blog\/only-2-percent-receive-sign-language-for-the-deaf-education\/","title":{"rendered":"Only 2 percent receive Sign language (for the deaf) education"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[First posted on June 2018, see update below]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is estimated that there are nearly 32 Million deaf, hard-of-hearing children around the world and of those only 20% have access to education but only 2% of those actually receive sign language education. This lack of language skills will impact the kids life long as they won\u2019t be able to develop social and cognitive skills and will result in lack of job &amp; growth opportunities. There are variety of reasons for having such a low percentage, which include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lack of awareness of parents &amp; community, as 90% of deaf kids are born to non-deaf parents. Also the lack of local resources to help figure out how\/what could be done to educate such a kid. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lack of teachers who can teach the sign language and teaching resources<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lack of content and the way it is distributed. Now with the online\/mobile penetration this could be easily solved, but this leads to the next challenge, that is <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lack of proper tools to create the content with ease in all the local languages. This is definitely where we need better software platforms and tools, perhaps AI can play big role in creating\/automating the creation of visual sign content. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, AllChildrenReading.org announced <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/allchildrenreading.org\/all-children-reading-awards-innovators-increasing-access-to-local-sign-languages\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">winners of phase 1 of its competition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
